7 Most Popular Footwear Mistakes to Avoid

7 Most Popular Footwear Mistakes to Avoid ...

Whenever I’m in a public place, whether it is a supermarket, the mall, or my college campus, I always see footwear mistakes. Women think they’re being fashion-forward, but instead, they look utterly ridiculous! These seven most popular footwear mistakes I see on the regular basis need to be stopped. Check out this list and make sure you’re not making these fashion faux-pas!

1. Crocs

They aren’t as much of a fad as they were when they first came out, but Crocs definitely top my list of footwear mistakes! I don’t understand why these darn things were ever invented! They look like clown shoes, but worse. The holes make the footwear look even more hideous. Plus, they look like they are made from cheap plastic. No matter how comfortable they may be, you look ridiculous trekking around in these shoes. Opt for some comfy boots or flats instead, so you don’t look like a clown that escaped the insane asylum. Yikes!

2. Socks with Sandals

Okay, ladies, here’s the scoop. You’re defeating the breathability of sandals by wearing socks with them. Plus, imagine if you get caught in the rain – there go your socks! Socks aren’t supposed to be seen outside of your shoes! No matter how fancy they may be, keep your socks hidden inside your shoes.

3. Too Much Bling

I know there’s a fad out about rhinestone shoes, but you don’t want to blind people b y the amount of bling on your shoes. Plus, with an outrageous amount of sparkle, the person you’re trying to talk to will be too busy staring at your shoes instead of paying attention to what you’re saying! What a nightmare! Don’t do that to yourselves, ladies!

4. Uggs in The Summer

Why? I just can’t figure out why women wear UGG boots in the summer. By the time they get out of the summer heat, their feet must be sweating profusely! I understand they’re comfy and fashionable, but you look like you didn’t check the weather for the right location when you head outside wearing sheep-skin boots in the summertime.

5. Flip Flops in The Winter

I’m surprised none of these people get frostbite on their toes! Similar to the previous footwear mistake, you also look like you haven’t checked the weather or noticed the snowflakes falling from the sky. Save yourself from hypothermia and humiliation by bundling up (your feet included) during the colder months!

6. Heels That Give You Supernatural Height

I don’t know how many times I’ve spotted women towering above me in epically high heels. Now, ladies, if you’re six foot five already, don’t buy five inch heels. Save yourself the trouble of ducking under doorways and save those heels for the ladies that need an extra height boost. This way, you won’t look like you turned into the Hulk and be accused of stomping on little children!

7. Wearing Slippers in a Public Place

I’ve worn my slippers to grab the mail at the end of my driveway, but I’ve never worn my fuzzy slippers to a public place. Once again, they may be comfy, but they aren’t made to trek around in. The soles aren’t sturdy and you’ll look a bit out of place if you succumb to this footwear nightmare.

Now that you know what constitutes a footwear faux pas, save yourself the embarrassment and never leave the house without first double checking to see if you’ve committed any of these footwear mistakes. Have you ever committed these footwear felonies? Go ahead and confess – I bet you’re not the only one!

THE GLYCEMIC INDEX AND WEIGHT CONTROL

Jennie Brand-Miller, PhD
Thomas M.S. Wolever MD, PhD
Stephen Colagiuri, MD
Kaye Foster-Powell, M Nutr & Diet (The New Glucose Revolution)

Obesity is now recognized as a serious and growing health concern for a large section of the American population. Between 1991 - 2000, obesity in the United State rose 60 percent. Two in three American adults are overweight and one in three is obese. Even children are effected - over 15 percent of American children are overweight. We need to tackle the problem on many fronts, including exercise and diet. The glycemic index can play an important role in weight management by helping to control appetite and insulin level.

At best - while you stick to it - a diet will reduce your calorie intake. At it worst, a diet will change your body composition for the fatter. This is because many diets employ the technique of drastically reducing your carbohydrate intake to bring about quick weight loss. The weight you lose, however, is mostly water (that was trapped or held with stored carbohydrate) and muscle (as it is broken down to produce the glucose you need to fuel your brain). Once you return to your former way of eating, your body contains a little  less muscle mass. With each repetition of a diet you lose more muscle. Over year, the resultant change in body composition to less muscle and proportionately more fat makes weight control increasingly difficult. Your body requires less and less energy to keep the engine idling.

The Real Aim in Losing Weight is Losing Body Fat.

We will give you some important facts about food and how your body use it. Not all food are equal. When it comes to losing weight, it is not necessarily a matter of reducing how much you eat. Research has shown that the type of food you give your body determines what it is going to burn and what it is going to store as body fat. It has also revealed that certain foods are more satisfying to the appetite than others.

This is where the glycemic index plays a leading role. Low-GI foods have two essential advantages for people trying to lose weight:

1. They fill you up and keep you satisfied for longer.

2. They help you burn more body fat and less muscle.

Eating to lose weight with low-GI foods is easier because you don't have to go hungry and what you end up with is true fat release.

Why is Being Overweight a Problem ?

If you are overweight you are at  increased risk of a range of health problems. Among these are heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, gout, gallstones, sleep apnea (when breathing stops for a significant period of time; snoring is a good sign of this), and arthritis. Along with this list of complications, there is an equal number of emotional and psychological problems associated with being overweight.

We can tell you which foods satisfy hunger for longer and the least likely to encourage weight gain. When you use the glycemic index as  the basic for your food choice, there is no need to :

- overly restrict your food intake
- obsesively count calorie
- starve yourself

Learning which foods your body works best on is what using the glycemic index is all about. It is also worthwhile to take control of aspects of your lifestyle that have an impact on your weight. You may not create a new body form your efforts, but you will feel better about the body you're got. Eating well and exercising is the aim of the game.

Measuring The Fuel We Need

Remember, CALORIES are a measure of the energy in food and the energy we require to keep our hearts beating and our brains working, just as a car needs so many gallons of gasoline to run for a day. Food and drink are our sources of calories. If we eat and drink too much we may store the additional as extra body fat and protein. If we consume fewer calories than we need, our bodies will break down their stores fat and protein to make up for the shortfall.

So, if you were born with a tendency to be overweight, why does it matter what you eat? The answer is that foods (more correctly, nutrients) are not equal in there effect on body metabolism. In particular, the foods you eat dictate the fuel mix that you burn for several hours after eating. If you are burning more fat and less carbohydrate, even if the energy content of the food is the same, then chances are you'll be less hungry and less likely to gain body fat over the course of the day. Consequently. your choice of foods is critical for the weight control.

Among all four major sources of calories in food (protein, fat, carbohydrate, and alcohol), fat has the highest energy content per gram, twice that of carbohydrate and protein. A high-fast food is therefore said to be "energy dense," meaning there are a lot of calories in a relatively small amount of food. A typical croissant made with wafer-thin layer of buttery pastry contains about 500 calories (which equates to about 20 - 25 percent of total energy needs for most people for the day!). To eat the same amount of energy in the form of apples, you have to eat about six large apples. So, getting more energy - calories - than your body needs is relatively easy when eating an energy-dense food.

What You Need to Know About Energy Density

A Food's "energy density" (calories per gram) is more important to weight control than its fat content.

Assessing a food's energy density has become more important than knowing its fat content. Some diets, such as traditional Mediterranean diets, contain quite a lot of fat (mainly from olive oil, but are still bulky because they are based on large portions of fruits and vegetables, including foods like legumes, which have exceptionally low GI values.

Many new low-fat foods on the market are not bulky - they have the same energy density as the original high-fat food. Examples include low-fat yogurts, ice creams, and sweet and savory snack products. So read the label - look for the energy content per 100 grams or per serving as your best guide to food's "fattening" power.

You can eat quantity - just consider the quality!

During the 1990s, one of the most notable research findings was that high fat foods were less satiating than conventional high-carbohydrate foods. For this reason, dieters were advised to stay away from high-fat foods, and the food industry responded to call for more low-fat foods.

Unfortunately, along the way, someone forgot to say that what really counts is a food's final energy density. If a low-fat food has the same energy density (calories per gram) as a high-fat food, then it's just as easy to overconsume. There are lots of low-fat products on the market that are no different from  the high-fat counterpart when it comes to calories per gram. The best examples are low-fat yogurts, ice cream, cracker and cookies.

Think Energy Density Not High Fat or Low Fat

Nutritionists have therefore had to find-tune the message ordiets for weight control:

- eating bulky food is more important than simply eating low fat
- the type of fat is more critical to long-term health
- the type of carbohydrate is as important as the amount

Why Exercise Keep You Moving

THE EFFECT of exercise doesn't end when you stop moving. People who exercise have higher metabolic rates and their bodies burn more calories per minute even when they are sleep!

The Need for Exercise

A fast metabolism is not necessarily a matter of luck. Exercise, or any physical activity, speed up our metabolic rate. By increasing our caloric expenditure, exercise helps to balance our sometimes excessive calorie intake from food.

Exercise also makes our muscles bigger (and therefore more energy demanding) and better at using fat as a source of fuel. By making our muscles more sensitive to insulin, exercise reduces the demand for this hormone and increases the amount of fat we burn. A low-GI diet has the same effect. Low-GI foods reduce the amount of insulin we need, which makes fat easier to burn and harder to store. When we eat a low-GI meal, the fuel mix being burned for the next few hours contain more fat and less carbohydrate. Since body fat is what you want to get rid of when you lose weight, exercise in combination with a low-GI diet makes a lot of sense.

Which Foods Affect Weight?

It was widely - and wrongly - believed for many years that sugar and starchy foods like potatoes, rice, and pasta were the cause of obesity. Twenty years ago, every weight-loss diet advocated restriction of these carbohydrate-rich foods. One of the reasons for this carbohydrate restriction stemmed from the apparently instant results of low-carbohydrate diets. If your diet is very low in carbohydrate you will lose weight fast. . The problem is that what you primarily lose is carbohydrate and fluid, and not fat. Moreover, a low-carbohydrate diet depletes the limited carbohydrate (glycogen) stores in the muscles, making exercise difficult and tiring.

Sugar has been blamed for obesity because it is often found in energy-dense foods such as cakes, cookies, chocolate, and ice cream. These foods, however, contain a mixture of sugar and fat - and it's the fat that makes them energy dense. If we substituted starch for all the sugar, they would still contain the same energy content. The primary sources of concentrated energy in our diet are not sweet. Fatty meats, cheese, french fries, potato chips, rich sauces, crackers, butter, and margarine contain no sugar.

Counting The Calories

ALL FOODS contain calories. Often the calorie content of a food is considered a measure of how fattening it is. Carbohydrate and protein yield the fewest calories per gram.

carbohydrate = 4 calories per gram
protein           = 4 calories per gram
alcohol          = 7 calories per gram
fat                  = 9 calories per gram

On the whole, there is scant evidence to condemn sugar or starchy foods as the cause of obesity. Overweight people show a preference for energy dense foods rather than a preference for foods high in sugar or starch because their bodies have high energy requirements, even at rest, and the easiest way to satisfy their hunger is with high-energy foods. In a survey conducted at the University of Michigan where obese men and woman listed their favorite foods, men preferred mainly fatty meats and women listed cakes, cookies, and doughnuts. The unifying trait was a lot of energy per gram of food.

How Can The Glycemic Index Help?

One of the biggest challenges to losing weight can be feeling hungry all the time, but this gnawing feeling is not a necessary part of losing weight. Foods with low GI values are among the most filling of all foods and delay hunger pangs for longer.

In the past, it was believed that protein, fat, and carbohydrate foods, taken in equal quantities, satisfied our appetite equally. We now know from recent research that the satiating capacity - the degree to which foods make us feel full - of these three nutrients is not equal.

Fatty foods, in particular, have only a weak effect on satisfying appetite relative to the number of calories they provide. This has been demonstrated clearly in experimental situations where people are asked to eat until their appetite is satisfied. They overconsume calories if the foods they are offered are high in fat. When high-carbohydrate and low-fat foods are offered, they consume fewer calories when given the opportunity to eat until satisfied. So, conventional carbohydrate foods are the best for satisfying our appetite without over-satisfying our calorie requirement.

Satiety is The Feeling of Fullness And Satisfaction We Experience After Eating. Conventional Carbohydrate Foods Provide the best satiety.

In studies we conducted, people were given a range of individual foods that contained equal numbers of calories, then their satiety responses were compared. We found that the most filling foods were those that contained fewer calories per gram, i.c., the least energy dense. This included potatoes, oatmeal, apples, oranges, and pasta. Eating more of these food satisfies appetite without providing excess calories. Foods that provided a lot of calories per gram, like croissants, chocolate, and peanuts, were the least satisfying. These foods are more likely to leave us wanting more and more to lead to what scientist call passive overconsumption - overeating without realizing it.

After energy density, the second best predictor of satiety was a food's GI value - the lower the GI value, the more the food satisfied people's  hunger. Indeed there are now more than seventeen studies that confirm low-Gi foods are able to suppress hunger for longer than high-Gi foods.

There are probably several mechanisms responsible for this.

- Low-GI foods remain longer in the small intestine, triggering receptors that tell the brain there's foods still in the gut to be digested .

- High-GI foods may stimulate hunger because the rapid rise and fall in blood-glucose levels appears to stimulate counter regulatory responses to reverse the decline.

- Stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol are released when glucose levels rebound after a high-GI food. Both hormones tend to stimulate appetite.

- Low-GI foods may be more satiating simply because they are often less energy dense than their high-GI counterparts. The naturally high fiber content of many low-GI foods increases their bulk without increasing their energy content.

What's more, even when the calorie intake is the same, people eating low-GI foods may lose more weight than those eating high-GI foods. In a south African study the investigators divided overweight volunteers in to two groups: one group ate a low-calorie, high-GI diet and the other, a low-calorie, low-GI diet. The amount of calories, fat, protein, carbohydrate, and fiber in the diet was the same for both groups

Only the GI values of the diets were different. The low-GI group included foods like lentils, pasta, oatmeal, and corn in their diet and excluded high-GI foods like potatoes and bread. After twelve weeks, the volunteers in the group eating low-GI foods had lost, on average, 20 pounds - 4 pounds more than people in the group eating the diet of high-GI foods.

How did the low-GI diet work? The most significant finding was the different effects of the two diets on the level of insulin in the blood. Low-GI foods resulted in lower levels of insulin over the course of the day and night.

Insulin is hormone that is not only involved in regulating blood glucose levels, but also plays a key part in determining the fuel mix that we burn from minute to minute. High levels of insulin mean the body is forced to burn carbohydrate rather than fat. Thus, over the day, even if the total energy burn is the same, the proportions of fat and carbohydrate are not.

Obese individuals appear to have high glycogen (carbohydrate) stores that undergo major fluctuations during the day. This suggests that glycogen is a critical source of fuel for obese people . if glycogen is burning this makes it hard to burn the fat in food as well as the fast stored in the body. The next meal restores glycogen to its former high level (especially if the food has a high GI value) and the cycle repeats it self.

7 Wedding Color Combinations to Try

7 Wedding Color Combinations to Try ...

Coming up with great wedding color combinations can be a very stressful part of planning a wedding. The color scheme sets the tone for your entire wedding and is the basis for almost all of the rest of your planning. While there are hundreds upon hundreds of wedding color combinations to try, here are a few of my favorites and some that you may want to take into consideration when planning your special day. Good luck!

1. Navy & Light Pink

One of the many wedding color combinations to try is navy and light pink. It is a perfect balance between a dark masculine color and a light feminine color. Either navy dresses with coral flowers or coral dresses with navy flowers would be a great look for the bridesmaids. Because this color has somewhat of a preppy feel, it would be adorable to have a simple centerpiece scheme with a small polka dot or stripped patterns.

2. Lavender & Sage

Lavender and sage is a great wedding color combination for the spring or late summer. It will give your wedding a garden-like feel and is perfect for an outdoor wedding. Your bouquet can include lilacs, white amaryllis flowers, and actual sage to incorporate all of your colors.

3. Black & White

While it might seem boring to do a black and white color scheme, there is so much you can do with these two colors. If you want a more simplistic and basic feel, you can include more white and have smaller accents of black. Or if you want to a more elegant ad mysterious feel, use a mostly black color scheme with white accents. By playing with the balance between white and black, you can have just as much fun as with a more colorful combination.

4. Maroon & Pink

While it might not be the first thing you think of when you think wedding color combinations, two colors in the same family may be a nice thing to try. By combining maroon and pink, you can offset the darker and harsher maroon with the lighter and more playful pink. Depending on which color you prefer more, you can emphasize either the maroon or pink color and have accents of the other color to have a lighter or darker color scheme. It may seen more common to use pink dresses with this color scheme, but don’t be afraid to think outside of the box an have maroon bridesmaids dresses and ties for the groomsmen.

5. Red & Orange

This combination is especially great for a fall wedding. Your wedding color combination will go perfectly with the deep rustic color of the leaves during this season. You can even use real red and orange leaves as part of your table decorations. Orange dresses would look adorable with red and white bouquets and you can have a pop of red color against your white dress.

6. Green & Light Brown

Similar to lavender and sage, this wedding color combination is perfect for a spring wedding. These earthy and understated colors would give your wedding a very down to earthy and laid-back feeling. These colors would also go along great with an outdoor wedding. Go along with the earth vibe and make your centerpieces a vase filled with small branches, leaves, and green, white, and brown flowers.

7. Rainbow

If you want to stand apart and really show your fun personality, a rainbow colored wedding could be something to look into. It adds so many pops of color and brings a fun bright aspect to your special day. All of the bridesmaids can wear different colored dresses, and the groomsmen can wear different colored ties. You can make each centerpiece a combination of the different colors or have each table be a singular color. You can even play with a rainbow theme and have sayings such as “we are somewhere over the rainbow together”. Or maybe something less cheesy, I am not the greatest at making cute saying.
What do you think of these wedding color combinations? What are some of your favorite wedding color combinations? What color combination did you have for your special day?

Mix it up with tea lights, a few floral stems or unique pieces like buttons, candy, or fruit. Have you found any pretty little jars for your centerpieces?

2. Rustic Window Box…

I would have never thought to put together a window box for a centerpiece, but now I can’t stop thinking about how many unique arrangements you can make with it. The mixture of flowers and succulents brings a soft touch to this rustic centerpiece that would work for an indoor or outdoor reception.

3. Rustic Terrarium…

A little sand, a little dirt, a handful of rocks and succulents in a fish bowl and you have yourself a terrarium and a rustic centerpiece! The great thing about DIY centerpieces is that you have the option of sharing them with your guests as wedding favors and with favors like a plant you won’t have to worry that they will just toss it aside!

4. Rustic Bell Jar…

Don’t just use any old jar for your rustic centerpieces, use a bell jar that can be filled with anything from flowers and plants to old books and papers. To give them more of a rustic feel set your book filled bell jars on a bark platform to tie in that outdoor, country feel.

5. Rustic & Vintage Water Pitcher…

Water pitchers might be easy to find but it may not be so easy to find the perfect ones you’re looking to use for your rustic centerpieces. This is where DIY craft skills might come in handy! Buy a simple glass pitcher and make your own “pewter”, “mercury” or even “gold” rustic centerpiece with silver or gold leaf paper or with another DIY method using metallic acrylic paints and “looking glass” mirror-like spray paint!  Surprise yourself and your guests with this rustic chic project!

6. Rustic Water Pail Centerpiece…

Rustic ideas can be creative, chic, elegant, simple, or just about anything you want them to be. Think about the atmosphere of your venue and plan your rustic centerpiece with details that complement. I love how this rustic water pail is being used as a centerpiece and as a table number for a barnyard wedding shoot. The pail is perfect for a barn wedding but can also work for a backyard, park, or even a rustic mansion over looking the water.

7. Rustic Elegance…

If your venue is a city loft or a fancy hotel ballroom you can still play around with the idea of a rustic centerpiece, just give it an elegant twist and you’ll be the bride and groom who brought the outdoors and countryside to the big city! Instead of a rustic water pail place your floral branches in an elegant vase and place them at every other table so the branches don’t take over the beauty of the venue.

8. Rustic Branch Centerpiece…

Perhaps you have a more “outside of the box” thinking and really want your rustic centerpiece to be true to the rustic theme you are planning. So forget the water pail and the elegant vase, twist those branches together to form a table long piece that will bring your guests imaginations to the outdoors and countryside that you love.

9. Rustic Winter Pine Cones…

Pine cones are another outdoor element that can bring your rustic centerpiece to life especially for a fall or winter rustic wedding. With a little fake snow and a beautiful silver mirror you can turn a simple vase of pine cones into an elegant winter centerpiece or place them with small white pumpkins for your fall wedding.

10. Rustic Floral Bird’s Nest…

Who said a rustic centerpiece couldn’t be adorable! There are so many ways you can dress up this wonderful bird’s nest centerpiece. You can soften the rustic look with flowers like the one in the photo, place little birds that match your color scheme, or fill the nest with stones and succulents to give it a more natural touch. The creative ideas are endless!

11. Rustic Bark Vase…

Would you believe that this is not a hollowed out log, it is a vase wrapped in bark! You can easily find these on Etsy or you could also learn how to make them yourself for a great DIY wedding project. If you are a rustic couple who grew up in the countryside let your guests see your personality shine in details like this rustic centerpiece.

12. Rustic Birch Logs…

For long tables actual hollowed logs are a great way to compliment your rustic theme as well as the setting. I love the romantic look of this rustic centerpiece and how a bouquet of hydrangeas and white roses can bring out the beauty in a tree log. You can turn any outdoor space into an elegant rustic wedding with the right touches and a few candles!

13. Rustic Birdcages…

Birdcages are just like the bird’s nests we talked about, a creative and unique rustic centerpiece that can be filled with anything! If you really want to go all out with the rustic feel of your birdcage fill it with moss, twigs, little birds, or even an owl! You could also keep it simple like the idea in the photo with just a few candles and still have the rustic touch you are going for.

14. Rustic Chic Lanterns…

What I love about most of these ideas is that your rustic centerpiece can be used again after your wedding, like these charming lanterns. A lantern is another great piece that can have many looks with just a few different details. The silver lantern has a more elegant rustic feel surrounded by white flowers and filled with a tall white candle while the black lantern has a more outdoor rustic feel surrounded by succulents and stones and filled with a small orange candle. It’s all in the details and how you use them.

15. Rustic Woodland Candles …

The bride who made this gorgeous rustic centerpiece was on a budget and turned a few simple pieces into something that would help set the tone for her rustic wedding reception. You don’t have to go over the top, search high and low, or stress yourself out when it comes to any of your wedding details. Have fun, go simple and it will all come together naturally.

16. Rustic Apple Centerpiece…

If you are planning a budget friendly wedding using rustic centerpieces are a great way to make a big statement while saving money for other items like your gown or photographer. This lovely twig basket filled with green apples looks simple yet creative. Sometimes it’s the little things that will get your guests to say, “Wow look at that!” or “Wow how clever!”.

17. A Rustic DIY Garden…

Are you planning a garden wedding or looking to dress up your tin can centerpieces? Look for cans around your home, take the food labels off and follow these steps to a beautiful moss centerpiece. I love the idea of having natural elements for your indoor wedding. Do you have any DIY decor ideas for your garden themed wedding?

18. Mix it Up Rustic Style…

Not sure which unique centerpiece to use for your rustic, vintage wedding day? Mix things up with all three ideas of using bottles, tin cans, and jars and the table will speak for itself. How gorgeous is the rustic brown bottle with the single coral rose stem; less is more. Does this wedding decor speak to you?

19. Number Your RusticTables…

Looking for table numbers that won’t fall down or blow away for your outdoor wedding? Fill your jars with sand, dress up the lids, paint on your table numbers on and as fast as that you have fun, unique table numbers and favors for your guests! I love the idea of tying on the fabric with twine, making them look like jam jars.

20. Classic and Rustic Simplicity…

If you’re planning a simple yet classy day time wedding there is no need to get fancy with your jars. Grow your favorite flowers or visit the local farmer’s market, fill your mason jars with water and you have instant, beautiful centerpieces. How much do you love the matching table names? Two great floral ideas for your wedding reception.

No matter your budget, your venue, or where you are from, a rustic wedding and a rustic centerpiece can be any creative idea you want it to be. Whether it’s a tall water pail of branches and flowers or a birdcage filled with moss and succulents, let your rustic centerpiece speak for you and what you like. I hope these ideas are helpful for your rustic wedding plans and that you come back to share with us what creative rustic centerpieces you have DIY!

Happy Rustic Planning!
